About The Convention Speakers...
Thu Aug 14, 2008 at 12:23:49 AM PDT
So far, most of the prime-time slots have been announced and I am liking them. I especially like Mark Warner giving the keynote.
There are, however, lots of smaller slots yet to be announced, and I was wondering who they would include. There are a few people I'd really like to see who I fear may not get a chance to speak.
My Letter From Teddy Kennedy
Fri Aug 08, 2008 at 06:07:22 PM PDT
I was born in 1961, six months after JFK Jr was born. I do not understand why, but while growing up I was absolutely fascinated by JFK. I would read everything and anything I could get my hands on about him. His picture hung in my bedroom. Kind of strange, I know, but he was my hero when I was a kid.
Then, when I was 11 or 12 years old, the stories started appearing in the newspaper that JFK had an affair with Judith Campbell Exner. Well, to put it mildly, I was devastated and absolutely refused to believe it. Obviously, the newspaper was wrong. How could they print things like that? I was furious.
Get well soon, Senator Kennedy

I've been thinking of our liberal lion lately. It seems to me that there hasn't been much news of him for awhile. He suffered a seizure and was, of course, diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May.
Ted Kennedy Will Be in Denver (One Way or Another)
Mon Aug 04, 2008 at 12:54:52 AM PDT
Ever attentive to the trauma of brain cancer and injury, I took a moment to look for an update on Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) while wondering if he'll make the Convention in late August.
It seems that a film crew has arrived in Hyannis Port to create a short piece overviewing the Senator's life and career. It's to be viewed some time during the "Obama Brouhaha" (a colloquialism used by a friend of mine who is also a National delegate).
News of this crew's activities has created some speculation that the Senator may not be attending the event in person for whatever reason seems to make the headlines bolder for that day.

Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 05:06:34 PM PDT
Welcome back for more speculation! Today we'll continue the final elimination series of possibilities for Obama's v.p.
This series began with the bottom 14 names, and eliminates the bottom vote-getter(s) and replaces them with new name(s) from just up the list, reaveraging as we go (so each thread's bottom vote-getter[s] may not be the ones cut--who's cut will be determined by the new averages generated from this series's votes only). I'm hoping we'll have five or six candidates left when Obama picks and see if the DKos wisdom of crowds is. Gov. Janet Napolitano (AZ) was eliminated in the previous round, and Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (KS) rotated in to replace her this time. After the next thread, I'll be running the rankings of the remaining candidates each thread, just in case Obama beats this series to the punch.
Please discuss any v.p. candidates in the comments. The most correct format would be to simply state their name, unless you have further comments. "Oh my God, where's Jane/Johnny Politician?!" would be a bit alarmist, don't you think? I'm sure they're fine. I'm happy to hear all ideas, and of course I'm no official gatekeeper, so play nice.

VEEPSTAKES: Pro-Choice Catholic would be a mistake, group says
Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 08:48:17 AM PDT
WOW! This one has me all hot under the collar. The Catholic News Agency is claiming that Obama's pick of a Catholic VP would somehow turn away Catholics is UNBELIEVABLE.
Here is a glimpse of the CNA release:
Chicago, Jul 31, 2008- As reports circulate that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama is considering Virginia Governor Tim Kaine, a Catholic who supports abortion, for his vice-presidential pick, the national Catholic advocacy group Fidelis is arguing that the choice of a pro-abortion Catholic as Obama’s running mate would put off Catholic voters who are still considering his candidacy.
Here is my take .... after the flip.

Minimum Wage Jumps to $6.55, No Thanks to John McCain
Thu Jul 24, 2008 at 12:22:03 PM PDT
On Thursday, Americans saw the minimum wage jump to $6.55 an hour. Boosted by the second of three 70 cent increases passed by the new Democratic majority in Congress after the 2006 mid-term elections, the minimum wage will move to $7.25 next year. But to be sure, the two million Americans who got a raise today won't have John McCain to thank for it.

Elaine Chao Must Withdraw 'Secret Rule'
Wed Jul 23, 2008 at 01:15:54 PM PDT
This morning, the Washington Post exposed the Bush administration’s latest ploy that could radically change the way health and safety regulations are issued. This secret regulation is a clear attempt by the Bush administration and the business community to fundamentally weaken the scientific process for enacting new regulations that protect American workers.
Today, Senator Kennedy and I demanded that Labor Secretary Elaine Chao withdraw this rule immediately and turn over all communications with outside special interests and other documents relating to proposed rule. You can read the letter here.
